Artifact 5: Artificial Lighting: Lamp Test

For my 5th artifact I am looking at how artificial lighting can create and change the character and aesthetics of an interior designed space. After doing some research I thought i'd start by making a lamp and getting the lighting right before I import it into my scene. I will be using the scene I created for artifact 1 as it is my living room at uni and I am able to take photos of artificial light in this room for reference images.

Artifact 4- Deterioration

Client: First Rendered Visual Walk through

Due to rendering issues I have had to improvise for this hand in, so my video is not what it should be however my work is still rendering so hopefully by the end of the weekend I should have this looking a lot better. But here's the first cut anyways...

Artifact 2 Compleated

Artifact 1 Compleated

Busy Busy Busy and on a Roll... I'm Back in the Game!!

I'v been very busy these last few weeks, trying to boost my work into a higher grade. I'v also been doing some work experience with a company called Courts Design doing exhibition visuals, it was a lot of fun and I really have enjoyed it. It's made me realise I would quite like to stay in this industry after university and it has also given me back my drive to succeed in my uni work. I'm on a roll now.

Working at Courts has also taught me a lot! They worked with me on my lighting skills and they have improved tremendously! My visuals look 10x better now just because of my lighting.

I have now completed artifact 1 and 2 completely! I do not need to go back and adjust anything in them. I am spending a lot of time on artifact 3 at the moment trying to get the textures spot on. This will lead into artifact 4 where I deteriorate the textures, so they need to be right first time around.

I have been documenting my research progress in a hand journal with images of my progress as I have gone along, this has helped me to see visually how much i have done and what I need to amend.

Client: Hotel Bathroom Doors

This is my bathroom i have designed for my hotel room, the doors slide open and are touch sensitive so there's no buttons.

Client: Saving Space, Folding Sofa

I designed a sofa that was built into the wall of the hotel room and by ipad control it folds out of the wall. This is just a very rough animation clip to show what i mean, the models cut into each other a bit but you get the jist.

Client Research: Home of the Future

This is documentary on channel 4 i have watched about what the technologies that will make up the future home. Below is the advert of the documentary and there is also a link to the documentary itself on 4od below.

Artefact 2: Research

So as you saw in my first artifact, I took a photo of a small room with only one window allowing light. For my second artifact I have taken a photo of a large bright room which allows a lot of light to pass through the many bi folding doors.

Here is the original photo and the model I have made in max. I have used the Daylight system again however I am struggling to understand the technical details involved with the daylight system. My images have both turned out very dark. I have got the image of light I wanted to create in the right place and angle however it looks like night time, this is something I am working on and I will post up the corrected versions on here once I have discovered how to do it.

Client: Saving Space, Underground Bed

Here i have modeled and animated a bed rising from under the floorboards. This is a design i have come up with to save space in my hotel room. I am not certain i will definatley use this idea but it's a step forward in the right direction.

Artefact 1: Re Done

So after my first attempt at artefact one i have added on to it to make it more of an artefact. Below is the video of photos i took of a small dark room with one window throughout the day and i have also chosen one on the photos to create in max and try to create the same light effect. I am going to get a focus group to tell me what character of not only the person they would expect to occupy this room but the character of the room itself, what it might be used for? etc.

24 Rooms in 1

This is a link to a daily mail article on an architect from Hong Kong who created sliding inter-changeable walls in his tiny apartment to create more space than was available. It's incredible and is something i am really thinking about to help my hotel design.

Lighting Moodboard

Here is the work of Alex Roman and Rafael Reis Saliba

Tuesday, 24 January 2012

Artefact 1: Research

For my first artefact i have decided to concentrate on lighting. I have redefined my question to fit my artefact so i stick to the point i am trying to make:
How does lighting help to define the aesthetics and character of a 3d interior designed space?

I am going to look at artists such as Alex Roman and Rafael Reis Saliba. I want to determine how lighting can effect how people perceive a room.

Client Research

After creating a few mood-boards i have defined my ideas down and got a theme for my hotel room, i need to change my designs however. I have come up with an initial design that i attached to my proposal however i feel it needs to be adapted or at least create a few more and combine them to create the ideal design for the hotel room. I need to take into account that it's an environmental brief therefore i should do some more in-depth research into sustainability and environmentally friendly materials.

Time Lines

This is my Gannt chart showing both research and client modules combined to help organise myself and plan my time as i have a lot to do in a small space of time. It's not very clear as the timeline is so long it was hard to get one still image off it all.
